What is AI?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a type of computer science that creates ‘intelligent’ machines. In recent years, it has become an integral part of the technological industry. The idea is to make the machines work and react like human beings. Although AI is often portrayed as human-like robots, it also can encompass things such as Google’s search algorithms and IBM’s autonomous weapons.

Artificial Intelligence is known these days as narrow (or weak) AI due to the fact that it is designed to perform narrow tasks such as Internet searches or facial recognition. However, in the future the aim is to create strong AI, which would surpass humans at almost every cognitive task.

What are the types of AI?

  1. Machine Learning – this creates software algorithms that are self-learning and can make predictions about data.

  2. Neural Networks –neural networks process a number of unique inputs, then process and rationalize it into knowledge.

  3. Deep Learning – this is the last step and aims to model high-level abstractions about what a given set of inputs might combine to do.

What are the advantages of AI?

  1. Reduction of errors - AI can help us in reducing errors and instead reach a greater degree of accuracy.

  2. Daily Application – Computed ways of automating reasoning, perception and learning have become a way of life. E.g. Siri or Cortana. It is widely employed by organizations to organize and manage data.

  3. Digital assistants – Some organizations use Avatars, which are digital assistants who interact with customers, thus saving the need of HR.

  4. Reduction of repetitive jobs – AI machines can be used to do the repetitive and monotonous tasks at a faster and more accurate rate.

What are the disadvantages of AI?

  1. High cost – The creation of AI requires huge costs due to the complexity of their machines. Maintenance and repairs are also very costly.

  2. Cannot truly replicate humans – An ethical argument of AI is that intelligence cannot be replicated. Also, machines do not have any moral values or emotions.

  3. Unemployment – Perhaps the biggest worry of AI as the replacement of jobs with machines can lead to large-scale unemployment.
