Bain's Leadership Mindsets and Behaviors Matrix Model Template

A editable version of SLAGT's Bain Leadership Mindset and Behaviors Model for C-Level executives to position their leadership teams when faced with change.

Description
In November 2017, Peter Slagt (Partner and leader of the Transformation and Change Practice in EMEA at Bain & Company), published an article via "Bain Insights" on Forbes, called "Where Did We Lose Our Founder's Mentality?"

SLAGT discusses the importance of maintaining a "Founder's Mentality" within organizations for long-term success. His article emphasizes the significance of nurturing a sense of purpose, ownership, and initiative among employees, especially at the leadership level. He highlights the prevalence of different archetypes among leaders, such as Founders, Tourists, Victims, and Blockers, and emphasizes the need to promote a mindset resembling that of founders throughout the organizational hierarchy.

Furthermore, to enable this transformation he suggests key steps, including:
- fostering an insurgent mission,
- utilizing micro-battles,
- and developing a blend of hard and soft leadership skills.

The article underscores that cultivating a Founder's Mentality is essential not only for current success but also for long-term sustainability and growth in the face of evolving market dynamics.

In the article, he draws out a 2x2 matrix that aims at characterising leadership mindset & behaviors for leaders.

The matrix has 2 axis :
- X-Axis: "Response to Change" : the way individuals or organizations react and adapt to shifts in their environment, either internal or external. It encompasses the various attitudes, behaviors, and actions that individuals and groups demonstrate in the face of evolving circumstances, challenges, or opportunities within the business landscape.
- Y-Axis: "Leadership Posture" : the collective stance, approach, and behavior of leaders within an organization, particularly in relation to fostering a culture that encourages and sustains a Founder's Mentality. It involves the manner in which leaders influence and shape the mindset, behavior, and performance of their teams, promoting a sense of ownership, purpose, and innovation. This posture encompasses the leadership's role in spearheading change initiatives, fostering employee engagement, and facilitating the development of an environment that nurtures growth, adaptability, and success.

The combination of these axises leads to 4 different leadership mindsets & behaviors :

😎 Founders: (Positive Response to Change, Active Leadership posture) - Pioneers that drive the transformation, seizing the initiative and embodying the mindset of genuine proprietors and pioneers of the enterprise.

🥳 Tourists: (Positive Response to Change, Passive Leadership posture) - Spectators that on the other hand, observe from a distance, having navigated through and continuing to navigate the complexities of the corporate world. They have learned to refrain from taking the lead and simply adhere to the existing norms. They offer support from the sidelines, ensuring limited personal risks and maintaining their presence successfully.

😫 Victims: (Negative Response to Change, Passive Leadership posture) - Naysayers that lament from the periphery, habitually pointing fingers at others: be it the competitors, the market, the customers, the regulators, or the management for the predicament that the company or they themselves are facing. They remain passive and exhibit minimal inclination for proactive measures.

😡 Blockers: (Negative Response to Change, Active Leadership posture) - Obstructors that openly or covertly hinder progress, sometimes due to fear, often owing to self-interest. They attempt to obstruct any modifications to the current state of affairs that may jeopardize their position of authority and influence or their future within the company.

Given the pertinence of the application of this framework in the context of the Bain 2017 article, I decided to create a universal template any C-Level member can use to position his leadership team's individual mindset and behaviors when faced to change.
