ASME B31.4 Pipeline Wall Thickness & Span Calculator (Excel Dashboard)

An Excel dashboard that checks pipeline wall thickness against ASME B31.4 (liquid/slurry pipeline transportation) and reports max support span and external coll

Description
Built on ASME B31.4's own pressure-design equation for liquid and slurry pipelines: S = 0.72 × E × SMYS, tp = P·Do / (2S) — verified directly against the ASME B31.4-2002 standard text (para 402.3.1(a) & 404.1.2).

Enter your design pressure, pipe diameter, trial wall thickness, corrosion allowance, and mill tolerance, then pick a pipe grade (12 built-in options covering ASTM A106/A53, API 5L B through X70, JIS SS400, and 304/316 stainless — or enter custom SMYS/UTS) and a weld joint type. The sheet resolves material strength and joint factor automatically and returns:

  • Wall Thickness Check — PASS/FAIL against the required nominal thickness
  • Governing Max Span — bending-stress support span limit
  • Collapse Pressure Rating — external collapse pressure (Sturm/von Mises thin-shell)
Three KPI cards up top give you the verdict at a glance — no scrolling through formulas to find the answer.

Limitations: the weld joint/quality factor (E) uses common reference categories, not a full specification-by-specification table. Max span and collapse-pressure checks are general engineering estimates, independent of which code governs the pressure design. This tool supports preliminary design verification only — final design must be reviewed by a certified/PE engineer against the current edition of ASME B31.4.

Quickly verify that a pipeline's wall thickness meets ASME B31.4 pressure-design requirements for liquid and slurry transportation pipelines, and check the governing maximum support span and external collapse pressure rating — all from one input sheet, with an instant PASS/FAIL verdict.

Preliminary wall thickness sizing or verification for liquid/slurry transportation pipelines under ASME B31.4 (crude oil, refined products, water, slurry lines). Works with common line pipe grades (ASTM A106/A53, API 5L B–X70) and stainless (304/316), or custom SMYS/UTS input. Useful for quick sizing checks, design reviews, and sanity-checking vendor calculations.

Not for gas transmission pipelines (governed by ASME B31.8) or process/plant piping (ASME B31.3) — those need their own design factors and allowable-stress rules. Also not a substitute for final stamped engineering design: the weld-joint factor uses general reference categories rather than a full spec-by-spec table, and results should be confirmed by a certified/PE engineer against the current ASME B31.4 edition before construction.
