PowerPoint Dos and Don'ts for Public Speaking

A key set of dos and don'ts for using PowerPoint in public speaking and presentations.

Description
In this video, Dominic Colenso sets out a series of dos and don't for when presenting with presentation softwares like PowerPoint, Prezi and Keynote.

His first tip is based on reading your slides and the screen behind you. He suggests that these softwares should not be used as a prompt. Dominic explains that these softwares are simply there to reinforce your points and support your presentation. These softwares are not designed for your notes. Using your slides as a script will really take away from your engagement with your audience.

Secondly, Dominic explains how to use text on your slides. This will help you to keep the focus on you, the speaker, during the presentation, and simply use the slides to enforce your messages.

Dominic encourages you to use pictures and images. These will help your audience to associate what you are saying with specific images, making the information that you give more memorable and ensuring that your audience take away your message.

You should think about these softwares as your backdrop. Your PowerPoint should be used to enhance your presentation. PowerPoint itself is not your presentation, you are.

These tips will help you use PowerPoint in a way that makes your message more memorable, whilst allowing you to engage your audience.
