Description
PLC stands for Programmable Logic Controller, and it is like a small computer that contains a built-in operating system, aka OS. The OS is highly optimized and specialized so that it can handle incoming events at the time of their occurence, i.e. real time.

Sensors are connected to input lines to notify of events such as the temperature being below or above a certain level or the level of liquid reached. Actuators are connected to output lines to signal reactions to the current events, e.g. open or close a valve or start an engine.

The system can be programmed by the user. The main language used is called Relay Ladder Logic.
