Remote teams are a reality. Whether on a short-term basis during uncertain times or permanently, remote working has become the new norm in recent months. But without water cooler breaks, breakroom chats and meetings, how can you best handle your remote team? Here are 10 tips to help you build a strategy and plan.

Step n°1 |
Make sure equipment and tools are working properly and are up to date
Working remotely requires a communicative and collaborative environment with employees constantly in touch on calls, emails or messaging. Therefore, it's essential to have the best monitors, headphones, and cameras.
Step n°2 |
Have a system in place
An emergency situation is not a good time to develope a system. Employees must be aware of the tools and how they can be used in certain situations, such as:
- Video call is best when you have a sensitive or complicated issue to discuss. They may take more time to arrange but it is the most efficient way to solve issues and have everyone on the same page in real time.
- Voice call is good too as it's the most natural way to communicate after transitioning from the office environment.
- Online messaging chats are quick and easy to update people efficiently, but are not good for detailed information.
- Email is good for detailed information and can be used a record for reference but they are prone to misinterpretation.

Develop a communication strategy
After your system is in place, arrange how and when employees will check in, determine guidelines of your expectations from these check ins and what aspects are urgent and what is not.
