Description
Built on ASME B31.8's pressure-design equation for gas transmission pipelines: t = P·Do / (2·S·F·E·T), per para 841.1. Unlike B31.4 (fixed design factor), B31.8 scales the allowable stress by location class — the population density around the pipeline — so the same pipe can require different wall thickness depending on where it runs.


Enter your design pressure, pipe diameter, trial wall thickness, corrosion allowance, and mill tolerance, then select a pipe grade (12 built-in options: ASTM A106/A53, API 5L B through X70, JIS SS400, 304/316 stainless, or custom SMYS/UTS), weld joint type, and location class (Class 1 Div 1/2 through Class 4 urban). The sheet resolves material strength, joint factor, and location design factor automatically and returns:
  • Wall Thickness Check — PASS/FAIL against the required nominal thickness
  • Governing Max Span — bending-stress support span limit
  • Collapse Pressure Rating — external collapse pressure (Sturm/von Mises thin-shell)


Three KPI cards up top give you the verdict at a glance.


Limitations: the default temperature derating factor (T = 1.00) is valid only at or below 121°C/250°F — the elevated-temperature T-factor table (ASME B31.8 Table 841.1.8-1) is not built into this tool; obtain it from your own copy of the code for hotter service. The weld joint/quality factor (E) uses common reference categories, not a full spec-by-spec table. Max span and collapse-pressure checks are general engineering estimates, independent of which code governs the pressure design.
