Description
When doing a thorough Market/Industry Analysis, visualising different actors in their own "category", is a great way to get a snapshot of who's in the game. Market Landscape Maps are often shared on social media or in Market Analysis decks, and are therefore a key Best Practice for any strategy consultant or business leader to have in the toolbox. With such a tool, one can then identify new marketing strategies and competitive advantage moves. In M&A (Mergers & Acquisitions), this is also often used to present the global market in which a fund or a leading company wants to make acquisitions, and identify key "categories", "sub-categories" or actors they want to be present in/acquire.
In the methodology, the key part is to identify with success the various categories various actors can be positioned in. For this, I strongly advise using our Market Positioning VS Competition Template available separately here.
Examples of potential angles for categories:
- Geographic Focus
- Organization Size
- Type of Organization
- Services and Programs

And it's definition on Quora by Tom Novak.
Given the popularity of this slide structure, I decided to create a series of 3 universal templates, 100% editable.
The file is 3 editable Microsoft PowerPoint Template Slides (a 6 uneven category, a 4 even category, and a 4 even category with multiple sub-categories) with an online or offline 7 step-by-step methodology, with pedagogical illustrations for each step.
Steps to build a Industry Landscape or Market Mapping:
1/ Read about the Theory, and understand the objectives
2/ Pick the format that best suits your objectives/situation
3/ Identify your Categories (and if pertinent, sub-categories) - see recommendation on this step above
4/ Add the logos
5/ Personalise the slide (colours, company logo, sources and notes)
Should you have any questions you're welcome to reach out to me via Private Message on this platform.
Good Luck!
