Tom Peters and Robert Waterman, former McKinsey & Company consultants developed the 7-S Framework in the late 1970s. Its objective is to help business leaders better position their organization to achieve their goals or implement change with success.

The framework is based on the alignement, relationships & interdependencies between seven key internal elements:

- Strategy: The Plan to create and maintain a competitive advantage on market.
- Structure: The organization of the Company (departments, teams, internal reporting relationships, organizational chart...)
- Systems: activities and procedures used by the staff on a day to day basis to get work done.
- Shared Values: Central Values of the Organization linked to the Corporate Culture and Organizational Ethics.
- Skills: Pragmatic and existent skillset and competencies of the staff (implemented or actionable) in the organization.
- Style: Leadership style of top management - in practice and in its communication.
- Staff: Employees and their capabilities.

The key to use this framework is to use a methodology to assess the relationships between each key internal elements and to judge whether they are working well together. A precise assessment will then enable business leaders tofocus on a priority selection of problems to get going. Additional problems can be addressed at a later stage.

As a pragmatic hands-on tool, I decided to re-create a "universal" Template Slide Worksheet Matrix for consultants/executives to use when assessing their organization's effectiveness.
