GE-McKinsey Nine-Box Matrix Template

A template as an innovative approach to the GE-McKinsey 9-Box Matrix Framework, to position Company Business Units.

Description
The GE-McKinsey 9-Box Matrix Framework was believed to be created by the world famous consulting firm McKinsey & Company in the early 1970s, just after the BCG Matrix.

The Framework was originally developed for GE (General Electric), to identify & retain key talents (Potential vs Performance).

This specific Template can be used to evaluate business units or products to optimize investments for a specific company or portfolio. It has two main axis: Industry Attractiveness & Competitive Strength, with three levels (high, medium & low). This creates a 9-box matrix on which an analyst can position various business units or products.

Outputs fall into 3 main categories of actions:
Category 1: Protect Position, Invest to Build, Build Selectively
Category 2: Protect Position & Refocus, Selectivity/Manage for Earnings, Build Selectively
Category 3: Manage for Earnings, Expand or Harvest, Divest

This GE-McKinsey 9-Box Matrix Template has been built to precisely position business units or products on the matrix, thanks to an associated Excel Graph positioned as an overlay.

The key being to correctly calculate Industry Attractiveness & Competitive Strength. To do this, the model enables to input scores (on a scale from 0 to 1) for multiple factors, with weights for each.

Industry Attractiveness Factors (Examples):

- Industry growth rate
- Industry size
- Industry profitability
- Industry structure
- Trend of prices
- Market segmentation

Competitive Strength Factors (Examples):

- Market Share
- Relative growth rate
- Company’s profitability
- Brand value
- VRIO resources
- CPM Score

Other factors can be included & weights changed according to your Company's industry, market or type of business units.

The 9-box Matrix framework can be changed/adapted to multiple analysis by simply changing the names of the axis.
